Skilled Nursing Care

What is Skilled Nursing Care?

Skilled nursing care refers to treatment or care provided by licensed medical professionals in certified nursing centers. Such nursing centers include convalescent homes, nursing homes, hospitals, rehab clinics, and some retirement communities. Certified centers must meet regulatory standards set forth by the U.S. Department of Health and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Skilled nursing centers offer both temporary and long-term care designed to help patients recover and maintain optimal levels of health and mobility. Such care often includes:

Physical Therapy – An individually tailored program of exercises designed to improve strength and flexibility. A physical therapist oversees the patient’s performance to ensure exercises are done safely and correctly.

Occupational Therapy – Exercises designed to help patients master tasks such as dressing, writing, balancing, and navigating work or home environments. OT addresses problems with motor skills and physical coordination.

Speech Therapy – Designed to help patients who have trouble communicating, swallowing, or mastering oral functions. Special diets may be recommended as part of therapeutic treatment.

Skilled nursing services can also include:

  • Memory care
  • Wound care
  • Intravenous (IV) therapy
  • Vital sign monitoring

Skilled nursing care is often prescribed for people attempting to recover from major health events, such as a heart attack, stroke, joint replacement surgery, or serious illness. If treatment is performed at a CMS-certified center, Medicare and Medicaid may help cover the cost.

Licensed medical staff at these centers include registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), speech and occupational therapists, and medical directors. At Community Care on Palm, these amazing professionals provide innovative, personalized care with a friendly spirit. Call us today to discover why we’re the best in CMS-certified nursing care.
